Shipping companies are companies that deal with shipping of goods from one part of the world to the other in huge containers. There are many companies along the world that deal in shipping.

Some names are almost a century old. It is not possible to mention all the significant shipping companies in this one article. Nevertheless, we will try to discuss few names that changed the way shipping is done forever. Some of the largest shipping companies in the world will be discussed now.
The list should definitely start with Maersk. It is a Danish company. It was started over hundred years ago in 1904. It has the largest number of containers in the sea; the number is a little higher than five hundred containers. Talking of size Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha also known as NYK, it is one the largest shipping company that operates internationally.

It was originally a passenger shipping company that was later transformed to a cargo shipping company in the middle of the twentieth century. China has its very own shipping company that is acclaimed worldwide for its efficiency. The name is Evergreen Marine Corporation that was found in 1968 by Dr. Yung-Fa Chang. It has about nothing less than one hundred and sixty container ships doing rounds in the world.

MSC stands for the Mediterranean Shipping Company; it is one of the most extensive companies that exist in the cargo shipping business. Almost all countries have a list of shipping companies. However, only few are recognized internationally. Hapag-Lloyd is a German shipping company. It is a very renowned company in the shipping business.

It started in 1970; it is a merger between two very famous organizations that is Hamburg-American Line and the North German company Lloyd. It has a terrific business record and has about five million containers worldwide. American President Lines also called APL was founded in 1848. The company is perhaps one of the oldest in this business and has a very good track record. It has about one hundred and sixty years of shipping experience behind it.

Some more names that must be mentioned when we are discussing the largest shipping companies in the world are names like COSCO which is also called China Ocean Shipping Company. It has its operations spread in about forty countries and has about a hundred fifty containers to operate. Now that we have discussed almost the whole world, how can we miss out the shipping companies that are based out of South East Asian countries? Hanjin is a South Korea based company. It has the capacity to transport about one billion ton of cargo a year. The fleet size is sixty ships.

In 2003 both COSCO and Hanjin have formed a strategic alliance making this as the Asia’s largest shipping company as there are hardly any other companies to match this collaboration.
