Oil tankers are supposed to be one of the gigantic-sized type of water vehicles. They may be 350 mt high on average which is higher than Statue of Liberty and Eiffel tower.
The largest oil tanker in the world before October, 2008 was the Knock Nevis, previously known as the Jahre Viking, Seawise Giant and Happy giant. Its statistics are as follows:
- Length – 458 mt / 1504 feet
- Width – 69 mt /226 ft
It weighs around 564,763 tons when totally empty of the cargo and 647,955 tons when fully loaded with 4.1 million barrels of crude oil. It’s a Norwegian owned supertanker. It was built around Iraq-Iran war i.e. during 1979-1981, damaged and re floated in 1991.It sits around 24.6 mt in water when fully loaded. Thus it cannot navigate through English canal alone, forget about manmade canals like Suez and Panama. The ship sails with the flag of Singapore.
Today the world’s biggest crude oil tanker is named as Hua San. It was delivered five months ahead of its delivery schedule on October 27th, 2008. It’s an environment friendly very large crude carrier (VLCC).This mammoth piece of water vehicle was designed by Shanghais Waigaoqio Shipbuilding for Ocean Tankers.
It’s the world’s only super oil tanker with largest deadweight and most modern design. It complies with the latest Common Structural rules by International Association of Classification societies. Thus it’s a milestone for the ship industry for designing such a giant piece of marine art with perfection.
Its statistics are as follows:
- 333mt in length
- 60mt in width (beam)
- 21 mt of design draft
- 318,000 tons of dead weight
- Speed of 16.1 knots
- 29,000 nautical miles of endurance
The company gained a huge response worldwide and has bagged an order of 16 such carriers worldwide.
