Communication has many forms and especially in shipping and marine industry, symbols and flags are used to denote a lot of things. A seasoned seafarer needs to be familiar with the different types of signals which are being sent by flags of different colours and designs.
It must be noted that the same flag/s might have different meaning in different contexts. For example a same flag may have a different meaning in shipping while in case of boat racing the meaning of the same type of flag could be totally different. However a mariner can easily identify which situation is present and then both the parties sending the signal and that receiving or viewing the signal can find out the meaning using standard code books. This of course means that even if you do not remember the signals by heart you can possibly survive, but a true sailor does not leave any opportunity to learn and hence it would be greatly helpful if you could figure out which flag means what in different contexts. It might sound a bit tricky in the beginning but with time you will certainly find out the difference.
